El Paso, TX — Coming off a third place finish in last April’s New Mexican Spring Futurity, Woodys Allstar was firing on all cylinders on Friday, and the two-year-old filly set the top qualifying time for the $290,602 Shue Fly Futurity at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino.
Well prepared by trainer Mike Joiner, Woodys Allstar blew past an all-star group of stakes horses and won by an expanding 1 and 3/4 lengths in a fast time of 18.939 seconds for the 400 yard trial. The New Mexico-bred filly by Woodbridge handily defeated both Sassy Moonflash and Moonifisant. The latter was the winner of the 2013 New Mexican Spring Futurity.
Here is the list of qualifiers for the $290,602 Shue Fly to be run on Saturday, January 4, 2014. The winner will receive $136,583.

Live racing resumes on Saturday at 12:15 p.m. Multiple stakes winner Coronas Boy looms large in the featured $85,000 Challenger Six Handicap (5th race) at 870 yards. The 2012 Getaway Stakes winner is fresh off an impressive 28-1 long shot win over Rollickin Red in the New Mexico Cup 870 Championship at Zia Park. D E Wagons Strawfly should provide plenty of resistance.
Sunday’s 11-race card is propelled by a terrific edition of the $85,000 Enchantress Stakes at one mile. Two of the finest New Mexico-bred two-year-old fillies will rekindle their rivalry. Double stakes winner That’s The Idea was unbeaten in her first three outs before finishing second to Lady Genius in the Eddy County Stakes at Zia Park going one mile. That’s The Idea, a daughter of Diabolical, has earned over $222,000 in her brilliant career for owner Kirk and Judy Robison. The potent front runner is trained by Henry Dominguez.
Lady Genius counters with her own brilliance for trainer Dallas Barton. The 2013 Copper Top Futurity for fillies winner has enjoyed an exceptional freshman campaign having won two stakes and over a quarter million dollars. The Quinton’s Gold filly finished second to That’s The Idea twice and recorded her first win over that rival last time at Zia Park. The Enchantress Stakes will provide a dramatic conclusion to this great rivalry in 2013.
Rollsetroll and Ilikewinnin are also horses to watch in the Thoroughbred feature.
The $85,000 Lou Wooten and Sydney Valentini Handicap is Sunday’s Quarter Horse feature for the New Mexico-bred fillies and mares racing 400 yards. Aful Alibi and Get Down Bambi are coming off first and second finishes in the New Mexico Cup Fillies and Mares Championship at Zia Park on November 27.
