El Paso, TX — UTEP middle blocker Xitlali Herrera was named All-Southwest Region by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA), which announced its Div. I All-Region Teams and Region Coaches of the Year on Tuesday.
The senior is one of three Miners in program history to receive All-Region honors, joining Kari Stacy who made the squad in 2005 and Jeane Horton in 2012.
Herrera makes her third appearance on the All-Region team; in 2011 she was named an All-Region Honorable Mention and in 2012 she was named to the Midwest All-Region Team.
The middle blocker is an all-around competitor as she plays all six rotations. She started in all 30 matches this season and leads the team in kills (465), hitting percentage (.303), and blocks (24s/82a).
Herrera has registered 13 double-doubles this season for UTEP, including an impressive 18 kills and 17 digs versus Marshall where she led the squad’s defense and offense. She tied for the top spot in the UTEP recordbook for kills in three sets as she posted 24 kills against Oral Roberts (9/26). Herrera sits next to Catherine Porter (1999) in the category with 24 kills against Rice.
She has totaled 10 or more kills in 29 matches and 10 or more digs in 13 matches during her 2013 campaign, making her the 10th Miner to join the 1,000 kill club registering an outstanding 1,182 kills in only three years with UTEP.
This season, Herrera was named C-USA Offensive Player of the Week and received C-USA All-Academic honors. The senior concluded the season, as she became the first Miner in program history to earn three consecutive All-C-USA first team honors.
