LAS CRUCES, N.M. — A homeless man has been arrested after allegedly stabbing another homeless man while drinking outside a restaurant under construction Thursday night.
Samuel Miller, 51, is being charged with an open count of murder in the death of David Jones, 55, who died on the scene from multiple stab wounds.
"Obviously there's some type of altercation that occurred," Trujillo said.
The stabbing happened on Valley Drive near the Walmart behind a K-Bob's restaurant at about 10 p.m. but police initially responded to the Walmart after Miller had walked there after being stabbed himself.
Police said they found Miller with a stab wound in his lower back but he was able to speak with officers on scene and before being airlifted to El Paso for further care.
"He said that he and a buddy got jumped behind a restaurant that's under construction across the parking lot," said Las Cruces Police Spokesperson Dan Tujillo.
Trujillo said after speaking with Miller, officers were sent to the K-Bob's restaurant about a couple hundred yards away.
"We found the body of a man who was deceased," Trujillo said.
David Jones had suffered multiple wounds to his upper torso.
Police said Miller had three knives on him and one was bloody and they said they also noticed blood on his sleeves that was inconsistent with the wound on his back.
Police believe Miller was headed to Walmart with the intention of washing the blood of his hands.
Miller was taken to the hospital in El Paso last night and has since been arrested by the U.S. Marshal's Service.
Miller will be held at the El Paso County Detention Center pending extradition to New Mexico.
This is the second stabbing this week resulting in a homicide in Las Cruces. Wednesday morning, Jerome Saiz was stabbed to death in his Las Cruces home. LCPD have arrested two suspects related to that case.
