EL Paso, TX - In a few hours, the clock will strike midnight and this year's tax season will be over.
"Always the 15th is the busiest day and we had a rush since yesterday. everybody wants to do their taxes," tax preparer Fernie Magana said.
Not everybody necessarily wants to do their taxes but everbody does have to file them or at the very least, request an extension. a concept that CPA's say most people don't understand.
"Alot of people will file an extension that owe money, CPA Fernie Aceves said. "An extension is just an extension to file, never an extension to pay. If people owe money, they have to send their money today. Today is the last day."
Other tax preparers we talked to today said the only people who wait until the last minute to file are those that expect to owe money.
"Our busiest season, believe it or not, is probably the last week of January and the first week of February," Aceves said. "That's when everybody wants to file their returns. The ones that file their return right now is because of other reasons. Either they owe money and they want to postpone it as much as possible."
Despite constant words of warning, its inevitable procrastinators will convene at the post office office tonight to pay Uncle Sam.
"I feel sorry for them," early filer Tom Stevens said. "They're waiting till the last moment, the last minute. we know we have to pay taxes. We know since we're small that April the 15th is when the tax money is due."
