LAS CRUCES, N.M. — The City of Las Cruces and the New Mexico State University Athletics Department announced a partnership Tuesday Morning promoting community outreach and strengthening the relationship between both parities.
University President Garrey Carruthers, Athletics Director Dr. McKinley Boston and Las Cruces Mayor Ken Miyagishima signed a memorandum that will have university athletes and coaches become more engaged in the community.
"There's a perception that there's a disconnect between the university and the community and this is one way to get young people on campus and introduce them to the university," Boston said.
Coaches and athletes in all sports will provide their expertise at city leagues and sign autographs at events year round.
Boston said student athletes already volunteer about 5,000 hours of community service year round, but this will provide a more personal relationship.
"This is a huge thing for the city, not only our children that participate in various sports but the adults who will also get a chance to say hi and really meet these young men and women," said Mayor Miyagishima.
The city will be promoting Aggie athletics with game day banners at city buildings and will also have a day where employees are encourage to wear crimson.
Tickets for sporting events will also be available at a discount for city participants.
