El Paso, TX (KTSM) —
El Paso Police identified the man killed in Thursday morning's fatal wrong-way accident on I-10 as 29-year-old Gabriel Morales. Morales was headed eastbound on I-10 near the Zaragoza exit in his 2007 Mazda 6I when a gold 2004 Mercedees driven by a 49-year-old man hit him head-on going westbound in the eastbound lanes.
Police said the 49-year-old wrong-way driver was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries. EPPD will release the name of the wrong-way driver as soon as he is charged.
A man was killed after a wrong-way driver caused a head-on collision in East El Paso.
The crash happened just before 2:15 a.m. Thursday on I-10 eastbound and Zaragoza.
El Paso police said the driver of a gold Mercedes was going westbound on the eastbound lanes of I-10, when he collided with black Mazda. The man driving the Mazda was killed.
Paramedics took the driver of the Mercedes to the hospital with minor injuries. Police suspect he was drunk at the time of the accident.
"Since a person died as a result of the crash, it is a mandatory blood draw so blood will be drawn on the driver at the hospital. That blood will be sent to a laboratory and will be able to determine blood alcohol content of that driver and it's above the legal limit, then we can expect charges will be filed," said Mike Baranyay with El Paso Police Department.
Police said the driver would be charged with intoxication manslaughter.
All eastbound lanes of I-10 and Zaragoza were closed for several hours during the police investigation.
Police did not release the names of the people involved.
