Austin, TX (KXAN) — A woman who lives on 10 acres backing up to Onion Creek had barely drifted off to sleep as heavy rains poured down on Southeast Austin before in the wee hours of Thursday morning.
At 4 a.m. her cell phone rang and she heard her brother's voice calling from Kyle. "Diane, they're rescuing people off Bluff Springs Road," he told her.
Waking up, Diane noticed water seeping under her front door. Outside, the water from creek was two feet above her foundation. She called for her dogs. Then she broke out a window and was planning to seek safety on the roof. By this time, the water was waist-high outside.
As she attempted to climb up, the force of the water pushed her back. Dogs in tow, the water swept her to a fence that somehow was holding firm against the torrent. But after a while, the fence gave way.
