El Paso, TX (KTSM) — Residents in East El Paso could soon see some traffic relief.
TxDOT showed two projects Wednesday that would alleviate traffic, add bicycle lanes and sidewalks to the proposed areas. One of the projects would connect Zaragoza Road to Loop 375 and Montwood Drive. It would also add a lane to Montwood Drive in each direction between Firehouse Drive and Sun Fire Blvd. The change has been long awaited according to residents and leaders in the community.
"It's one of the most dangerous intersections to ride a car. Now imagine riding a bicycle. People need to get more educated and they need to understand that we don't want to take the lane, we want to share the road," said Vice President of EP Cyclists, Pedro Martinez.
County Commissioner Carlos Leon, a resident and representative of the affected area is looking forward to seeing change and providing more safety, specifically at the intersection of Montwood and Zaragoza where there have been numerous traffic accidents and deaths.
"I think it's going to be a lot safer because of the ability to avoid that intersection and get to their houses or to their other driving targets a lot quicker," said Leon.
The other project would include adding an additional lane in each direction along Zaragoza Road between Sun Fire Blvd. and Montana Ave.
The engineering company, based in Houston, said the projects will help in the growth of El Paso's eastside.
"To see more growth and hopefully to reduce congestion and travel times for the folks that live out here,” said Jeremy Wyndham with Entech Civil Engineer.
