El Paso, TX — UTEP’s Martin Simonsen shot an eight-under-par 136 (71-65) and is tied for first place through 36 holes of the Price’s Give ‘Em Five UTEP Collegiate Golf Invitational on Friday at Butterfield Trail Golf Club.
Simonsen fired rounds of 71 and 65, putting him in a four-way tie with San Jose State’s Marcus Potter (67-69) and Cody Blick (69-67) and NM State’s Pat Beyhan (69-67) with 18 holes remaining on Saturday. A shotgun start is set for 8 a.m.
NM State leads the team race (278-273-551), followed by Colorado (275-284-559), San Jose State (280-281-561), Kansas (283-282-565), Air Force (276-289-565), Nebraska (286-284-570), UTEP (288-289-577), Northern Colorado (287-291-578), Idaho (290-289-579), Seattle (292-287-579), Western New Mexico (289-291-580), Grand Canyon (295-289-584), UC Riverside (289-298-587), Boise State (296-301-597) and Utah (304-300-604).
First-place NMSU has four individuals in the top-10 including Beyhan, Brett Walker (tied for fifth place, 70-67-137), Kenneth Fadke (tied for 10th place, 70-69-139) and Travis Benson (tied for 10th place, 69-70-139).
UTEP’s Jere Pelletier (71-75-146) and Jacob Loya (72-74-146) are tied for 37th place, Roberto Ruiz is tied for 51st place (74-75-149) and Frederik Dreier is tied for 75th place (78-76-154). The Miners’ Prescott Mann (tied for 19th place, 75-67-142), Jose Manuel Romero (tied for 56th place, 77-73-150), Ryan Fioretti (tied for 78th place, 81-74-155), Chris Juarez (tied for 78th place, 78-77-155) and Ian Patterson (85th place, 71-87-158) are competing as individuals.
This is the second annual edition of the tournament.
