Las Cruces, NM (KTSM) — A 30-year-old woman escaped serious physical injury early Thursday morning after she awoke and allegedly found a stranger masturbating in her hotel room.
At around 3:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, Las Cruces Police were dispatched to the Holiday Inn Express at 2635 S. Valley Dr. where a man had illegally entered a room that had been rented to an Albuquerque woman.
Detectives learned that the woman had gone to bed sometime before 10:30 p.m. Wednesday and was startled when she awoke at around 3:30 a.m. to find a man, later identified as Alan Israel Hernandez, 27, masturbating near her bed. The woman told detectives that she woke up when Hernandez grabbed her arm.
Hernandez took the woman’s cell phone and kept her from using the hotel room’s phone to call for help, so she ran into the hallway where a guest in a nearby room came to her aid. Hernandez, wearing only shorts, fled the hotel on a bicycle and was subsequently located by police a few blocks away.
The woman told detectives that she feared Hernandez was going to sexually assault her.
Hernandez’s clothing and miscellaneous property were found inside the woman’s hotel room. Police found no signs of forced entry and were unable to determine how Hernandez gained entry into the woman’s room.
A night clerk told police that Hernandez entered the hotel lobby to use the bathroom shortly before the incident occurred.
Hernandez has been charged with one count of aggravated non-residential burglary, he was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center with bond set at $25,000.
