El Paso, TX — The UTEP volleyball team kicks off a four match homestand with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-15, 25-20) victory over Rice on Sunday at Memorial Gym.
UTEP is now 11-7 overall, and 5-2 in C-USA as Rice drops to 6-16 and 3-5 in league play.
Xitlali Herrera led the Miners offensively and defensively as she secured 12 kills with only one error, eight digs, and two block assists. Malia Patterson aided the Miner offense as she delivered five kills with zero errors and 31 assists. Libero Victoria Valencia rounded out UTEP’s defense with a match high 14 digs.
Both squads fought point for point in the first set as the score tied 13 times. The Miners took the lead with 6-1 run as a kill by Herrera captured the set.
The Orange and Blue continued to find success in the second stanza as it held the Owls to .031 hitting percentage.
A 5-0 run in the final set gave the Miners a 21-16 lead. UTEP kept the lead as back-to-back kills put up by Taylor Nix and Talia Jones captured the third set for the Orange and Blue.
The Miners will return to the court Wednesday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. (MT) as they step out of Conference USA to host the Grand Canyon Antelopes.
