El Paso, TX (KTSM) — The El Paso Fire Department opened the doors to its training academy Saturday to welcome people who are interested in a career as an El Paso firefighter.
During the open house, training academy staff, firefighters and human resources personnel provided information about the requirements to become a firefighter, and answered questions about the upcoming recruitment process.
The position of a firefighter trainee will be posted on the city's website Monday, October 7, and will only be available for one day, or until 500 applications are received.
Interested applicants must be at least 18 years old, have a valid Texas driver's license, and have a high school diploma or GED.
Females are encouraged to apply.
"We'd like to see an increase in our female ranks. Currently, we have about 17 females on the fire department, and we'd like to see a rise in that. Along with the females, we welcome any candidate who has an interest in the fire department," said Rafael Reyes with the El Paso Fire Department.
The second state of the process will include a written exam. The academy is tentatively scheduled to begin in May 2014.
