El Paso, TX — The UTEP volleyball team defeated La Tech 3-1 (25-14, 25-15, 18-25, 25-16) in its first Conference USA match of the season.
UTEP has a season-long four-match winning streak in improving to 7-5 overall, setting off league play, 1-0. La Tech dropped to 6-10 overall record.
The Miners were led by Xitlali Herrera with 18 kills and only four errors. The senior added 17 digs and four block assists. Talia Jones tied with 18 kills and 7 errors. Malia Patterson set up the UTEP’s court action with 42 assists.
UTEP dominated the first set as a 5-1 gave the Miners a 6-2 lead. The Orange and Blue sustained their lead for the remainder of the set as Herrera captured the set with a kill.
The Orange and Blue hit .471 in the second set in winning 25-15.
The third set went to the Techsters as a 4-0 run gave La Tech the win 25-18.
The Miners rode a 4-0 run to a 6-3 lead in the fourth set. A second 6-0 run increased the Miners' lead to 16-9. The Orange and Blue closed out with the win on a kill by Herrera.
The Miners will return to the court Sunday, Sept. 29 at 12 p.m. (MT) with their second conference match against Tulane in New Orleans, Louisiana.
