EL PASO (KTSM) — University of Texas at El Paso students are on alert after an alleged attempted assault happened on campus. The police investigation is underway and the situation is raising safety concerns.
The university released a warning asking students to be vigilant of their surroundings.
"The students started running towards miner village, the individual followed them and the closed the door they were able to shut the gate, he kicked the gate trying to get in, he kicked the gate and pushed the gate in, while doing that one of the young ladies had her arms against the gate holding it down and she felt pain to her hands” Assistant police chief Ray Rodriguez said.
But this was not the only incident, just one day before this occurred, one UTEP student reported El Paso Police Department of a carjacking and theft close to campus, according to UTEP’s police this is the first time in years that something like this happens.
"In the 7 years I have been here at UTEP, we have never had an incident similar to the incident that occurred this past week where the young ladies were followed, we are investigating that case," Rodriguez added,
UTEP students were surprised to hear the news.
"I think this campus is really safe generally, it's kind of a shock for me to hear that. I've never heard any incidents like that before," UTEP student Elisa Huizar said.
"I am a little concerned but I can't say I'm really surprised because the campus is very big and it is an open campus so we are prone to these types of situations happening," UTEP student Laura Ruiz said.
UTEP's assistant police chief says the campus's safety is not at stake, however students should be vigilant.
"You’re safe, we're safe. We will notify you and you can call us if you need anything, we're here to help you." Rodriguez concluded.
UTEP is asking students to call the police department if the see any suspicious activity on campus. El Paso police department is also working in this investigation.
