Las Cruces, NM — Former New Mexico State women’s basketball player Stefanie Gilbreath is taking her talents overseas in Portugal on the LouSada L.A.C./Melom Naturance basketball team for the 2013-14 season as the only American on the team.
The 6-1 guard played for the Aggies for just one season, after transferring to NM State from the University of Southern California in the summer of 2012. She played for the Aggies during the 2102-13 season where she was named Western Athletic Conference Newcomer of the Year, earned second team all-conference honors and WAC Player of the Week accolades. Gilbreath helped the Aggies to a semifinals appearance in the 2013 WAC Tournament in Las Vegas, Nev., and a 15-16 overall season record and a 7-11 conference record.
“I am really excited and it means a lot to say I am a professional basketball player,” Gilbreath said. “This is the next chapter in my career. Coach (Mark) Trakh instilled a lot of confidence in me to make it this far and I am grateful for everything the coaching staff at New Mexico State taught me.”
She recorded five double-doubles and a career high 27 points during the season, while working her way the second best career scoring average, leading the Aggies with 17.5 points per contest. Gilbreath is set to leave the United State for her new team on Oct. 1.
