'Minerland' theme, new parade route announced
El Paso, Tx — UTEP's Homecoming celebration is just days away and the school has announced some changes for the yearly, week-long event.
The biggest change to Homecoming this year is the route and start time for the annual parade. UTEP officials say it will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5, at Oregon Street in front of University Towers, head down Glory Road and end at Glory Field. A Pep Rally at Glory Field will follow the parade.
“Minerland,” a nod to the original Disney amusement park, is the theme of this year’s homecoming activities.
Participating in the parade will be the Marching Miner Regiment, UTEP officials, honored alumni, and student groups and Greek organizations. Each of the groups will create motorized entries based on Disney or Pixar movies.
Another change is having different themed days during Homecoming Week to build student participation. The themes are “Toy Story” on Monday, “Star Wars” on Tuesday, “Pirates of the Caribbean” on Wednesday, wear-a-sports-jersey on Thursday and wear orange on Friday.
Along with other receptions and presentations will be the Distinguished Alumni Awards Dinner on Friday, Oct. 4, which will honor four Distinguished Alumni and 18 Gold Nuggets. The dinner will be held in the Don Haskins Center.
Favorite activities are returning as well. The lip-sync competition among student organizations will be at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, in the Union Plaza.
Students can also participate in the annual fundraising competition with proceeds going to Project MOVE (Miner Opportunities for Volunteer Experiences), the annual UTEP day of community service. These activities and the parade are part of the Registered Student Organization’s “RSOlympics.”
The winning student group will earn a traveling trophy that it can keep for a year.
Golden Grads representing the Class of 1963 and earlier will participate in activities that week, including a luncheon with University President Diana Natalicio at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 4, in UTEP’s El Paso Natural Gas Conference Center on Wiggins Road.
The week’s events begin with the 4th annual Commitment to Fitness Run/Walk at 8 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 29, outside the Health Sciences and Nursing Building, and continue later that day with the annual Student Government Association Homecoming 2013 Pageant from 7 to 9 p.m. in Magoffin Auditorium.
This year’s festivities end with the Homecoming game versus Louisiana Tech at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Sun Bowl Stadium.
