El Paso, Texas (KTSM) — We now know how much money the new superintendent of the El Paso Independent School District is making. Juan Cabrera's contract was made public Monday. The former lawyer will receive $285,000 a year, which is slightly less than the $300,000 that former superintendent Lorenzo Garcia made annually.
In addition to his salary, Cabrera will also receive $1,500 a month for personal and business travel and $1,200 a month for cell phone service and home office costs. That in addition to $35,000 in moving expenses and a $1 million life insurance policy where the district pays the premiums.
Former superintendent Garcia also had a $1 million life insurance policy, a perk no other superintendent of Texas' ten largest school districts received. However, unlike former superintendent Lorenzo Garcia, Cabrera will not receive bonuses based upon student standardized test scores. Garcia got an $18,000 bonus for reaching one or more of the school board's goals, based on student TAKS test performance.
