El Paso, TX — The UTEP volleyball team defeated Hampton University 3-1 (25-22, 25-16, 19-25, 25-18) in its final match of the UTEP/NMSU Invitational on Saturday.
UTEP has a season-long three-match winning streak in improving to 6-5 overall. Hampton dropped to 5-7.
The Miners were led by Taylor Nix with 17 kills and only two errors. Xitlali Herrera followed with 13 kills, while adding 10 digs and six blocks (2s/4a).
UTEP struggled early in the first set but a 5-0 run tied the score 18-18. The Miners scored the final four points of the set.
The Orange and Blue hit .292 in the second set in winning 25-16.
The third set went to the Pirates as a 4-1 run gave Hampton the win 25-19.
The Miners rode a 5-0 run to a 14-6 lead in the fourth set. A second 5-0 run increased the Miners’ lead to 19-10. The Orange and Blue closed out with the win on a kill by Nix.
The Miners will return to the court Friday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. (MT) with their first conference match against Louisiana Tech in Ruston, Louisiana
