El Paso, TX — The UTEP volleyball team defeated South Dakota State University 3-0 (25-14, 25-16, 27-25) in its first match of the UTEP/NMSU Invitational on Friday.
The Miners were led by Xitlali Herrera with 16 kills, nine digs, and six block assists. Malia Patterson secured a match high 39 assists. Patterson also added seven digs and four block assists.
UTEP went on a 9-0 run in the first set to surge to a 19-9 lead. The Miners broke a 12-12 deadlock in the second set with a 5-0 run.
In the third set, the Miners rallied from a 16-14 deficit and took the lead for good, 26-25, on a service error by the jackrabbits’ Courtney Roberts. UTEP closed out the win on a kill by Lindsey Larson.
The Miners will return to the court tomorrow at 2 p.m. (MT) to face off against Hampton University in their final match of the tournament.
