El Paso, TEXAS (KTSM) — With football season in full swing, UTEP is the heartbeat of El Paso. Miner fans flock to the campus, ready to tailgate and head to the game.
But there's one small problem; fans say the parking is a nightmare and UTEP. Student Giovanna Nieto parks off campus to avoid the chaos on game day.
"What I do is just park like really far and take the bus to get here. I don't know if everyone else wants to," said Nieto.
Fans say things have gotten worse this year with the parking situation. The new Sun Bowl garage, right next to the stadium, was originally offered to the general public for parking and then quickly taken off the table.
To add insult to injury, people say there were almost entire levels of the parking lot near empty on game day two weeks ago creating backlash from fans.
"People are like upset because they beat each other to parking,” said Nieto.
UTEP special events coordinator Jorge Vasquez explains why they had to backpedal on the original plan.
"We received a lot of requests for season tickets and a lot of requests for that parking garage. It was sold out before the season started.
And as for the vacant parking spots on game day not available for general public parking, Vasquez says they've all been paid for and reserved by season ticket holders.
“There were a lot of spaces in the parking garages. As the evening progresses, people come in right when the game is about to start or even when the game already started."
Nieto has some advice for fans upset about the change up in the Sun Bowl garage.
"Carpool or just park far and walk or get some exercise, because if you want to enjoy the game then you might want not have another option," said Nieto.
UTEP does provide other options for parking and would like to spread the word. Many of the new lots also offer free shuttles to the stadium. Visit:http://admin.utep.edu/Default.aspx?tabid=50621
