El Paso, TX — The UTEP women’s tennis team will begin the 2013 season at the NM State Aggie Invitational on Sept. 13 and wraps up Sept. 15 in Las Cruces, N.M.
“The team and I are all really excited for our first fall competition this weekend at NM State,” second-year head coach Mark Roberts said. “I am looking forward to seeing tall the players in matches, hopefully the rain stays away and we have a great weekend of competitive tennis.”
Roberts’ squad is set to face host NM State, Abilene Christian, Arizona, Grand Canyon, New Mexico, Northern Arizona, Tarleton State and Western New Mexico during the three-day event.
Seniors Rebeca Calvillo, Marie LeBlond, junior Anastasiya Sylenko and sophomores Jamie-Leigh Michau and Matilda Rose Tench will make the trip to Las Cruces. Newcomers junior transfer Davina Meza and freshman Daphne Visscher will get their first opportunity to represent the Orange and Blue in competitive play.
The Miners saw success during last year’s tournament, as Calvillo won the Crimson Singles Main Draw and Martina Trierweiler won the White Singles Main Draw. Trierweiler is currently an assistant coach under Roberts.
Friday’s matches are set to begin at 9 a.m. (MT) and will run through Sunday afternoon.
