El Paso, TX (KTSM) — Update: All lanes are open and El Paso Water Utilities has released the following statement:
"The flooding at Piedras and I-10 this morning makes the case for the outstanding stormwater improvements that need to be made to this area. Before any improvements were made the area was able to handle about a 2-year storm. Since EPWU completed Gateway Pond flood protection has been brought up to about a 10-year storm. We have several other projects planned that will altogether increase the flood protection to about a 25-year storm. One of those projects is for the Morenci pond, which will help capture runoff from the mountains. The bid for that project is being awarded at today's PSB meeting. The other projects are the Magnolia Force main and pump station that are multi-million dollar projects that will be completed over the next few years.
In short, there was a significant amount of rain in that area last night in a short time period, and the current system handled it to the best of its ability. Future improvements will increase the flood protection."
