El Paso, TX (KTSM) — Due to an early morning traffic accident that led to a malfunction of the air-conditioning system at Del Valle Elementary School (DVES), all students have been relocated to nearby YISD campuses for their regular classroom schedules Friday.
All students are safe and will be fed lunch according to their normal schedules.
The Del Valle Elementary students were relocated by grade in the following manner:
• Kindergarten through second grades: LeBarron Park Elementary School classrooms;
• Third through sixth grades: Del Valle High School gymnasium;
• Self-contained special-education classes: Del Valle High School classrooms.
At the end of the school day, students will be transported back to Del Valle Elementary for dismissal at the regularly scheduled time, when parents will be able to pick them up.
YISD officials said the air-conditioning system went out at Del Valle Elementary following an early morning traffic accident in which a vehicle knocked down a nearby utility pole.
The accident caused a power outage and surge at the school, which burned out the chillers that provide cooled air to the classrooms.
Power was restored to the campus but the chillers must be replaced, YISD officials said.
Del Valle Elementary School parents have been contacted via phone message and social media. In addition, school officials will send a letter home about the incident with students this afternoon.
