San Elizario, TX (KTSM) — The San Elizario Historic Arts District was named a Texas Cultural District this morning by the Texas Commission on the Arts.
San Elizario becomes only the twentieth Cultural District in Texas and El Paso County is the first county in the state to have two cultural districts.
State Representative Mary E. González (D-El Paso) worked closely with the San Elizario Historic Arts District this year to see this honor come to fruition.
"I am ecstatic to help bring one of only twenty Texas Cultural Districts in the state to the Lower Valley," said González.
Created in 2005, the Texas Commission on the Arts can designate cultural districts in cities across Texas.
Cultural districts are special zones that harness the power of cultural resources to stimulate economic development and community revitalization.
These districts can become focal points for generating businesses, attracting tourists, stimulating cultural development and fostering civic pride.
