Las Vegas, NV — The New Mexico State soccer team travels to Las Vegas, Nev., for two matches in the UNLV Nike Invitational. NM State meets LIU Brooklyn, Friday, Aug. 30 at 5:30 p.m., and Portland State, Sunday, Sept. 1 at 11:30 a.m.
LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds
The Blackbirds are 1-1-0 after the opening weekend. LIU Brooklyn fell to Saint Joseph’s, 1-0, Aug. 23 in the season opener but bounced back with a 1-0 win over Seton Hall, Aug. 26. Junior midfielder Sydney Ciufo gave the Blackbirds the game-winning goal.
This is the first meeting in school history between the Aggies and Blackbirds.
Portland State Vikings
The Vikings are 0-2-0 following the first weekend of the season. Portland State fell at Oregon, 3-0, Aug. 23. The Vikings then suffered a 3-2 loss to No. 14 Marquette, Aug. 25. Portland State opens the tournament against UNLV, Aug. 30.
This is the first meeting in school history between the Aggies and Vikings.
Aggies Open Season with Win
NM State opened the 2013 season at home with a 3-1 win over Nebraska-Omaha, Aug. 23. The Aggies posted a 12-6 advantage in shots with the veterans leading the way. Junior forward Layla Todd, junior midfielder Bree Luhrsen and senior midfielder Mary Kate Koziol each scored a goal in the season opener. Defensively, senior goalkeeper Jessica Schutter played all 90 minutes and grabbed four saves in the victory.
Aggie Offensive Steps Up
With three goals in the season opener against Nebraska-Omaha, Aug. 23, it was the first time the Aggies have scored multiple goal game since 2011. The Aggies have also out-shot opponents, 17-13, through two games.
The 2013 season marked only the second time in the program’s five years that the Aggies opened the year at home. In the 2010 season, the Aggies played to a 1-1 tie in double overtime with Montana, Aug. 22, 2010. NM State opened the 2012, 2011 and 2009 seasons on the road. The 3-1 win over Nebraska-Omaha, Aug. 23, marked the first time the Aggies have won a season opener. The Aggies are now 1-3-1 in season openers.
Aggies Edged in Overtime
In the first overtime match of the 2013 season, NM State fell to against in-state rival New Mexico, 1-0, in the 100th minute, Aug. 25. The Lobos ended the game with 38 seconds remaining in the first overtime period, when they scored on a free kick on the right side from 30-yards away. The match was a hard fought battle with only 12 combined shots. Senior midfielder Mary Kate Koziol and junior midfielder Katie Smith led the Aggies with two shots each. This was the second consecutive season the rivalry match has gone into extra periods.
Defensive Starts Strong
The Aggie defense has started the season on the right note. NM State has not allowed a first half goal in 2013 after the first two games of the year.
Todd Continues to Score
After leading the Aggies in goals in 2012, junior forward Layla Todd continued the scoring trend, when she scored the first goal of the season for the Aggies. She converted a rebound off a Nebraska-Omaha defender to give NM State a 1-0 lead less than five minutes into the game. She now has eight career goals, which ranks third on the Aggies’ all-time list.
Luhrsen Produces Game-Winners
Junior midfielder Bree Luhrsen has a knack for scoring when the Aggies need it. She increased NM State’s advantage to 2-0, with a shot from the right side from 10-yards away in the 16th-minute of action against Nebraska-Omaha. The goal was the game-winning score in the 3-1 decision and Luhrsen’s fifth career goal. Four of her goals have been game winners, and she ranks tied for second on NM State’s all-time list.
Koziol Dishes and Delivers
In the 2013 season opener, senior midfielder Mary Kate Koziol recorded both a score and an assist. She gave the Aggies a 3-0 halftime advantage after knocking in a goal on a corner kick in the 33rd minute. Koziol also provided the assist on Luhrsen’s score in the 16th minute. Koziol is now tied for second in career assists with six and tied for fourth in career goals with six.
White Defeats Crimson 5-3
NM State prepared for the upcoming 2013 season with its annual Crimson and White Scrimmage, and the White team beat the Crimson crew, 5-3, Aug. 17. Freshman forward Devin Hart and junior forward Layla Todd paced the White team with two goals each. Senior midfielder Daisy Hernandez also scored for the White team. For the Crimson squad, senior midfielder/defender Olivia Sierra, sophomore midfielder/forward Miranda Valdez and freshman forward/midfielder Salina Lucero each recorded a goal.
Welcome to Las Cruces
The Aggies have 10 newcomers on the roster this season. Freshman defender Victoria Archuleta, sophomore defender Cindy Buraczyk, freshman midfielder/forward Gabby Campbell, freshman defender Melissa Canizalez, freshman goalkeeper Tayler Hammack, freshman forward Devin Hart, freshman forward/midfielder Salina Lucero, freshman defender/midfielder Stephanie Petre, junior goalkeeper Taylor Rice and freshman defender Maggie Sabik are in the Class of 2013.
Aggies Picked Fifth in WAC Preseason Poll
NM State was voted to finish fifth in the WAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll, which is voted on by the league’s seven head coaches. Junior forward Layla Todd earned Preseason All-WAC team honors. She led the Aggies in shots (25) and goals (4) in 2012.
The Aggies return home for a pair of home matches. NM State hosts Stephen F. Austin, Sept. 6, and UC Riverside, Sept. 8, at the soccer complex.
