El Paso, Texas (KTSM) — You may soon have to pay more to register your vehicle. El Paso County Commissioners Friday will consider a fee hike of up to $10. The increase would be used to fund county transportation projects, and if approved, would take effect January 1st.
County Judge Veronica Escobar insists the only alternative is raising property taxes."We have a jail to fund. We have law enforcement to fund. We have a court system to fund. We can't begin a pattern of using our debt or our property taxes to fund things the state's not doing," said Escobar.
Escobar says a number of transportation projects in the county are currently awaiting funding. Commissioners would be able to also rescind the fee if necessary, and also leverage the fee in the future.
