LAS CRUCES, N.M. (KTSM) — A Doña Ana County man is behind bars tonight after he allegedly beat his five month-old daughter.
Police arrested the man Friday morning, after they were initially called to the home when the child was having trouble breathing. Twenty four year -old Jerry Marquez allegedly left the baby girl with serious head injuries. Las Cruces police say shortly before 11a.m. Friday they were called out to a home where the 5-month-old girl was having difficulty breathing.
They say on several occasions Marquez dropped his daughter and would hit her against furniture. Police believe he would also shake the little girl out of frustration. On Tuesday, Marquez allegedly called his girlfriend, the child's mother, and said he was going to commit suicide. On Wednesday morning, Marquez was arrested after being taken to the hospital for evaluation. The little girl is recovering in El Paso. Marquez is booked into the Doña Ana County Detention Center with a $150,000 cash only bond.
