The parents of a 3-month-old Las Cruces child have been charged with intentional child abuse after doctors at a Las Cruces hospital discovered severe injuries to the child's leg and head.
According to Las Cruces Police the 16-year-old mother and 17-year-old father, both of the 2100 block of Bex Street, are charged with one count each of intentional child abuse resulting in great bodily harm, conspiracy to commit child abuse and tampering with evidence.
Both were indicted by a Dona Ana County grand jury on Thursday.
LCPD detectives learned that on Saturday, Aug. 3, the couple took their 3-month-old son to Memorial Medical Center. There emergency room doctors examined the baby and found severe trauma to the child's leg and head. Officials say the baby was then transported to University Medical Center of El Paso for more intensive care.
Detectives learned from medical professionals that the child's injuries were consistent with child abuse. Detectives interviewed the teen parents and determined that their statements did not match and were "not indicative with the abilities of a 3-month-old child."
According to police, both parents were both arrested on Aug. 3, however the father attempted to run from officers at Memorial Medical Center but was apprehended and booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center.
Police officials say he is being held on warrants out of El Paso, while the child's mother was released from custody without bond.
The 3-month-old boy is still hospitalized and recovering from his injuries.
