On Tuesday around 6:30 p.m., New Mexico State Park Rangers were notified of a boat crash that happened about an hour and a half before that on Lake Carlsbad near the Canal Street bridge. Carlsbad firefighters were the first emergency personnel on scene. They found four individuals in the water, suffering from apparent injuries. All four individuals were transported by ambulance to the Carlsbad Medical Center, where Daniel Vasquez, 19, was later pronounced dead.
Investigators said the group had divided into two groups of two on each boat. They said one of the drivers turned into the path of the second resulting in a collision. It is unknown if alcohol or drugs contributed to the accident, however, all four individuals were wearing their lifejackets. State Park Rangers continue their investigation.
