Phoenix, AZ — Arizona authorities have recovered the body of Frank Castillo. The 44 year old Eastwood graduate and Major League Pitcher died Sunday while swimming in Bartlett Lake outside Phoenix.
Castillo was with friends when he jumped off a pontoon boat for a swim and never surfaced. Friends called for emergency help, who conducted a searched until darkness halted their efforts. The search continued Monday until the body was recovered in the afternoon.
Friends say Castillo was a poor swimmer and alcohol was not a factor in the drowning.
The Chicago Cubs drafted Castillo in 1987 out of Eastwood High School and he pitched 13 major league seasons for five teams. Castillo won a World Series ring with the Boston Red Sox in 2004.
He retired from baseball in 2007 and has served as a pitching instructor based out of Phoenix.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
