El Paso, TX — UTEP women’s basketball rising sophomore guard/forward Irene Gari is making a big impact for Spain at the 2013 FIBA U19 World Championships in Lithuania. Gari has contributed 10.0 points per game, 3.1 rebounds per game and 1.9 assists per contest to help Spain advance to the semifinals of the event.
Spain (7-0) will challenge France (6-1) in the first semifinal match-up at 8 a.m. MT Saturday. Four-time defending champion USA (7-0) battles Australia (6-1) in the second semifinal contest at 10:15 a.m. MT. The third-place contest & championship tilt will be held at a time still to be determined on Sunday.
Gari opened the tournament with 13 points, seven assists and five boards in an 84-70 victory against Japan on July 18. She contributed eight points, four rebounds and a pair of steals to help Spain trounce Argentina 68-32 on July 19.
She had a good rhythm going against Russia on July 23. Gari tallied eight points while pulling down four rebounds and also dishing out a pair of helpers. She was just getting warmed up, though, as Gari has caught fire from distance while leading Spain in scoring the past two games.
She lit up Brazil for 19 points, including draining 3-of-4 treys, in a 71-62 triumph on July 24. Gari then helped Spain punch its ticket to the event’s semifinals by pouring in 20 points, aided by going 3-of-5 from three-point range, in 27 minutes of action in the 80-62 dispatching of Canada.
Overall for the event Gari has hit on 45.3 percent (24-of-53) of her shots, including 50 percent (7-of-14) on three-point shots. She has connected on 15-of-18 free throws (83.3) while ringing up 11 total assists to just three turnovers.
