EL PASO--- Pizza is his passion, and now it's paid off.
Larry Gold of Hello Pizza in the Upper Valley is now the maker of the best pizza in the country.
"Well, I'm just a crazy guy from New York. And I always think of crazy new things to do. And I was thinking, what would be different that nobody's ever done before? I did it, and it worked!"
His latest creation, the "Pizza Garzing," won top national honors and fifth in the world at the International Pizza Expo in Las Vegas.
It's called gar-*zing*, because it has a special *zing* in its crust.
The pizza is made with habanero and garlic in the dough, said Gold.
The locals are eating it up.
"The "garzing" was awesome. It had just a little bit of heat to it, but not enough to where you miss the taste of the rest of the pizza. It's absolutely delicious," said Gary Trotta, a frequent customer.
"I didn't want the taste to be over-empowering when people put it in their mouth. I wanted them to capture it and leave an after taste, which it's done. That's what I wanted it to do," said Gold.
But don't try and change Gold's garzing.
"We're not letting any toppings on the pizza. You have to take it the way it is, with a special cheese," said Gold.
Because of the draw, Gold says business is up about 20 percent.
But he hopes his small pizzeria doesn't get too big.
"We're very small, and it does get busy quite often. We just try to do with what we have. We don't want anything bigger. We're happy right here," he said.
