EL PASO (KTSM) — El Paso County Commissioners agreed Monday to add a 'Plus One' policy to the health benefits package they offer to county employees.
El Paso County is only one in a handful of local government agencies which offer benefits to same-sex couples.
A lawsuit, filed by El Pasoan Carl Starr claimed the county's health benefits were unconstitutional.
Based on the Texas Attorney General's opinion that the current state constitution defines marriage between a man and a woman.
The county then considered the Plus One policy, which allows employees to select any person to receive benefits regardless of their relationship.
