FORT BLISS, TEXAS (KTSM) — Approximately 90 soldiers from the 4th Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, are scheduled to return from Afghanistan Friday at 6 p.m. at Biggs Army Air Field, officials announced.
The 4-17th "Buffalos" deployed last December to join a combined military coalition comprised of more than 62 nations focused on promoting a secure and stable region.
The "Buffalos," along with Coalition and Afghan security forces, performed several different missions oriented to respond to crises, and defeat hostile extremists.
The 4-17th Infantry teamed up with International Security Forces to assist the Afghan government through mentoring, training and equipping as U.S. Forces continue a responsible transfer of security to the Afghan National Security Forces.
This marks the beginning of the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team returning from Afghanistan. Other similarly-sized units from the brigade will return at various points between now and the redeployment of the brigade's main body in the late summer / early fall time frame.
