EL PASO, TX (KTSM) — Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott kicked off his campaign for governor, and spoke to El Pasoans Thursday at the Tony Lama Factory.
Abbott made the announcement at a rally in San Antonio. He's serving his third term as the state's attorney general.
On the 29th anniversary of a freak accident that left him paralyzed, Abbott said he figuratively and literally has a steel spine.
"You know, too often you hear politicians get up and talk about having a spine of steel," he said. "I actually have one, and I will use my steel spine to fight for you and for Texas families every single day."
Abbott was partially paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair when a falling oak tree crushed his back while jogging. He is considered the frontrunner to gain the Republican nomination.
