Phoenix, AZ (NBC) — The Las Cruces Fire Department is sending local firefighters to the Granite Mountain Hotshots Memorial in Prescott, Arizona.
The memorial is scheduled for Tuesday, July 9, 2013.
On Sunday, a somber procession made its way through the streets of Phoenix, as the bodies of the 19 firefighters made their way home in 19 hearses.
People lined the streets for a chance to honor the fallen firefighters, who died while battling a wildfire last week.
The hearses carried the bodies from the medical examiner's office, and underneath an American flag held high by two ladder trucks.
The men's bodies are headed for Prescott, Arizona, more than a hundred miles from Phoenix, and they are never alone.
A fellow firefighter has stayed with them since their bodies were discovered, and will stay with them until they are buried.
