Commissioners say 'it's not a good fit'
El Paso, TX (KTSM) — El Paso County has revoked their Medical Examiner position from Dr. Khalid Jaber. As to why they made the decision, "Tt just became clear that the fit is not a good fit for either party," Judge Veronica Escobar said. Jaber is not a US Citizen and the County has said they have been trying secure Jaber's visa so that hey may work in county.
As we've reported, County Commissioners have been discussing the selection and hiring of a permanent Medical Examiner in Executive Session for the past few weeks and finally confirmed that they will not be hiring Dr. Jaber.
County commissioners have claimed they have been having trouble filling the position due to a shortage of eligible Medical Examiner candidates within the US. The County fired then Medical Examiner Dr. Paul Shrode in 2010 after it was revealed that Shrode had lied on his resume. Dr. Juan Contin, who has previously served as the county's Medical Examiner decades ago, has been serving as the temporary Medical Examiner.
Dr. Juan Contin will continue to run the office. Dr. Mario Rascon is serving as a Deputy Medical Examiner and may fill the Medical Examiner position when Contin retires.
The County says they plan to look at the office's staffing issues when they review the budget in August.
