Roswell, NM (NBC) — It was a scene that deputies said they would not soon forget.
While checking on a house in Roswell, N.M., they found a five-year-old girl covered in feces and caged in a room.
Deputies were at the house checking on a possible fight when they saw the autistic girl banging on the window. They said she was filthy and naked in a room with baby gates screwed to the doorway.
She jumped into a deputy's arms and didn't let go. Officials took the child into state custody while an investigation is pending.
"This is not going to help her," her mother said. "She has never been away from home. Never."
The mother said she hopes when her daughter is cleaned up, they give her back.
So far she has not been charged with any crime.
