LAS CRUCES, N.M. (KTSM) — Carlos Nevarez Junior, a marine and volunteer firefighter, died on his 42nd birthday, allegedly at the hands of his fiancé, 38 year-old Annette Fuschini.
According to Fuschini's Facebook page, the couple was engaged and appear happy in many pictures. But also on her profile is a post, just two days before the tragic night reading "I'm worrying that if I give up smoking I'll replace it with murdering.”
Wednesday morning around midnight, after the two had been drinking at a friend's house, the couple began to argue. Nevarez Junior's ex-girlfriend showed up to the party, upsetting Fuschini, according to the arrest affidavit.
The couple left together and at one point, Nevarez Junior jumped out of Fuschini's car onto the sidewalk of Main street in Las Cruces. Then Fuschini.jumped the curb and intentionally ran over her fiancé, according to police.
"There was a body on the side of the road," said Dan Trujillo with the Las Cruces Police department.
Fuschini drove away, but then came back and tried to give Nevarez Junior CPR, according to Trujillo.
"She was intoxicated and officers could tell right away, she'd been consuming alcohol," said Trujillo.
Two witnesses who called 911 say Fuschini did not appear to know what she was doing.
"She really didn't use a lot of care when attending to him," said Trujillo.
Nevarez Junior was unconscious and severely hurt. No one could revive him and he died.
Wednesday afternoon, Nevarez Junior's father came by the scene of where his son died. He did not want to speak on camera, understandably, but did say this is the second child he will have to bury. The father said he had only met Annette Fuschini once or twice.
