Austin, TX (KTSM) — Nearly half of all Texas high school students still aren't proficient in writing. That's according to results from this year's STARR exams which were released today.Only 54 percent of all ninth graders passed the writing portion of the standardized exam.
But not all is bad news. Overall scores didn't change much from last year, and students did fare better in all other subjects. Math and science were the best subjects. More than 80 percent of all students passed those parts of the exam.
Todays results come the same day Governor Perry signed legislation reducing the number of state exams high school students must take to graduate from 15 to 5.
