El Paso, TX — UTEP’s Mark Jackson was awarded the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Mountain Region Field Athlete of the Year for the 2013 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field season.
The junior had a stellar season in the Orange and Blue constantly proving that he is acontender in the triple jump. The jumper earned the No. 4 spot in the national rankings after posting a personal best of 16.19m (53-01.50) at Drake Relays, which garnered him the meet title.
Jackson went on to help the Miners secure the C-USA title for the first time since 2008. The transfer scored an astonishing 20 points at the C-USA Championships winning the triple jump, taking bronze in the 100m with a time of 10.44 and finishing fifth in the long jump.
He represented UTEP at the 2013 NCAA West Preliminary Round in the long jump and triple jump. The junior qualified to the NCAA Championships with a leap of 15.94m (52-03.75), finishing sixth overall at the West Preliminaries with only three attempts.
Jackson heads into the NCAA Championships seeded seventh in the triple jump.
The Miners will be participating this upcoming weekend in the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore. from June 5-8. The meet will be broadcast on ESPNU and online on ESPN3 throughout the weekend beginning Thursday.
