Mesquite, NM--A Dona Ana County Sheriff’s deputy responded to a call from the Mesquite Mercantile Monday evening, March 29th. The sheriff’s office was called to investigate a theft of two 20 packs of beer by a group of young people.
When the deputy arrived on scene he recognized one of the suspects and soon after was able to locate them in a wooded area. As the deputy approached he heard some glass breaking. He then made contact with 3 men and a woman and was attacked by one of the male subjects, Nick Dominguez, (17 years old).
As Dominguez tried to grab the deputy’s firearm he was Tazed. Dominguez was able to flee the scene on foot and make it to the deputy’s vehicle. The suspect got into the police vehicle and placed it into gear. The deputy perceived a threat and fired his duty weapon at the suspect striking him several times. Nick Dominguez was pronounced dead at the scene by OMI at 4:00 am Tuesday.
There was evidence of consumption of alcoholic beverages at the scene, and a bag of a white powdery substance was also found at the scene.
The New Mexico State Police Investigative Agents were dispatched to the scene of the shooting near State Road 192 to investigate the officer involved shooting.
The investigation continues at this time.
