Las Cruces, NM — The NM State track and field team signed sprinter Katara Nelson from Irving, Texas, to a national letter of intent for the 2013-14 season.
Nelson competed in the 100-meter, 200-meter and 400-meter dash and also competed in the 4x400-meter relay at South Grand Prairie High School in Grand Prairie, Texas.
In her senior season, Nelson focused on the 200-meter dash and ended her season with a sixth place finish in the state championships with a time of 24.6. She finished first in regionals with a time of 24.3, which was her season-best time in the 200-meter dash. She was named Outstanding Athlete and MVP in her senior season.
In her junior season, Nelson ran a season-best time of 3:45 in the 4x400-meter relay. She also ran a time of 12.04 in the 100-meter dash. Nelson finished sixth in the 400-meter dash in the Junior Olympics and was named freshman of the year in 2009.
“She can help in the 100, 200 and 400-meter dash and we’re excited to have her,” head coach Orin Richburg said, “and she gives us some flexibility because she can run the relay.”
