Dr. Pedro Galaviz kicks off transition plan at Canutillo Elementary School
Canutillo, TX (KTSM) — Warm welcomes and handshakes were in order at Canutillo Elementary school. Students and educators welcomed their new superintendent on Wednesday.
Doctor Pedro Galaviz is an experienced educator and administrator and he says he's ready to take the school district into a more focused role. "Canutillo has a very, very good start because not all school districts this size are progressive thinkers," Dr. Pedro Galaviz told us, "We're going to work and we're going to work really hard to provide that learning for all students at Canutillo."
A part of that work includes addressing the alleged cheating that happened in the district. District officials say they've already addressed it with a corrective action plan. As we've reported, the district removed then Superintendent Doctor Damon Murphy back in December.
That removal prompted the hiring of Galaviz. The new superintendent is an experienced educator and administrator from Austin. "If it's good for kids we're going to do it. And everything with TEA and all that, that's just part of it," Galaviz said.
"We did not wait for TEA to come in and say, 'OK we're going to look at this audit.' We created corrective action plans as far as October-November," Annette Brigham, Associate Superintendent of CISD told us.
The new superintendent says he's ready to continue his work with his staff. "There's no easy solution as to student achievement. It is a process, and it takes work," Galaviz said.
Galaviz will continue his transition over the next two weeks. In the coming days he plans to meet with educators and community leaders. His official start date is June 3rd.
