A 5 month-old baby girl dies after being left alone in a locked SUV, parked in a lot near Riverside High School in the Lower Valley on Friday afternoon.
Police say the infant's mother left her alone in the vehicle for an unknown period of time. Authorities don't know why the mother left the child unattended or where she went.
"Charges are possible, obviously. We do have a child that has died but again, it's an ongoing investigation and they'll have to positively determine what the child died from and then of course be able to determine what individual is responsible for it," said Detective Mike Baranyay from the El Paso Police Department.
According to police, the baby was unconscious when the mother found her. School staff allegedly tried reviving the child but were unsuccessful. Emergency crews then took the little girl to Del Sol Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.
Authorities say they will conduct an autopsy to confirm the baby's exact cause of death.
"Just because a baby was left in a vehicle, doesn't automatically mean that that's what killed the baby or why the baby died," said Baranyay.
