Officials in Otero County say the risk of fire is too high, so they are issuing a burn ban.
The ban goes into effect Saturday, May 11 at 6 a.m. and will stay in place until rescinded.
Officials say due to the existing drought conditions they have to protect the health, safety and welfare of the citizens of Otero County.
The ban prohibits fireworks within the boundaries of the Lincoln National Forest and all burning of open flames.
Those who don't comply could be face criminal charges
