Ruston, L.A. — Six New Mexico State softball players were selected as part of the All-WAC teams for the 2013 season. Staci Rodriguez was named WAC Player of the Year and first team All-WAC. Amber Olive and Alex Newman also received first team All-WAC honors, while Kristi Covarrubia, Emma Adams and Malena Padilla were selected as part of the second team all-conference.
Rodriguez, a sophomore from Paramount, Calif., earns Player of the Year accolades after leading the WAC in home runs (9), RBI (26), total bases (56) and slugging percentage (.903) through league play. She ranks second in the conference for runs scored (16), fourth in batting average (.403) and on-base percentage (.507) and is sixth in hits (25). She was named WAC Hitter of the Week three times during the season and ranked as high as sixth in the nation for home runs. Sitting with 20 this year, the sophomore is currently tied for sixth in the nation.
Joining Rodriguez on the first team list are seniors Alex Newman and Amber Olive. Newman, a right-handed pitcher from Rio Linda, Calif., tied for the best earned run average in the league with a 1.25 in WAC games. She threw 89.1 innings in the circle and went 11-5. She pitched nine complete games for NM State with four shutouts. Newman held her opponents to a .234 batting average and walked just 11 batters in WAC play.
Olive, a left fielder from Simi Valley, Calif., led the WAC in conference game with 36 hits and was second with a staggering .462 batting average. She finished the season with just three strikeouts and four extra-base hits. Olive was second in the WAC for runs scored (16), on-base percentage (.512) and tied for second with two triples.
On the second team All-WAC was Covarrubia, Padilla and Adams. Covarrubia, a Las Cruces, N.M., native stepped out in conference play after suffering an early-season ankle injury. She finished WAC play with a .348 batting average and 15 runs scored. She had 23 hits, including four RBI.
Padilla, a sophomore from Oakley, Calif., had seven RBI in league play with 18 hits and nine scored runs. She started 19 games for NM State with a .321 batting average and .446 slugging percentage. Padilla had a sacrifice fly and a home run against Texas State in the Aggies’ 3-2 win.
Adams, a freshman third baseman from Corrales, N.M., ended WAC play with a .321 batting average with three home runs and nine RBI. She had four doubles and 17 total hits with two stolen bases. She had five multi-hit games and has been a power on defense for NM State at third base.
The Aggies open the 2013 WAC Tournament on Thursday, May 9 against either UT Arlington or Louisiana Tech. The Mavericks and the Lady Techsters face off on Wednesday, May 8, to decide which team meets the Aggies in round two of the tournament.
