LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Senior starting pitcher Ryan Beck threw a complete game shutout as the New Mexico State baseball team defeated San Jose State 9-0 at Presley Askew Field, Saturday, May 4. The Aggies improve to 26-21 on the year and 11-9 in Western Athletic Conference play.
Beck worked all nine innings and tallied three strikeouts allowing just one run on six hits on one walk. The NM State defense allowed two errors but got out of situations like it did in the seventh when it pulled a 6-3-1 double play.
“I am proud of what Beck did out there today,” head coach Rocky Ward said. “This is probably his best outing of the year and the offense is really starting to show the kind of consistency we expect.”
NM State posted its nine runs on 11 hits with home runs from left fielder Quinnton Mack and third baseman Bobby Lecount. Mack finished the evening going 3-of-4 at the dish with three RBI and three runs scored while also stealing his 16th base of the year. Lecount walked three times on the night and crossed the plate twice. Junior second baseman Jory Goldstrom also helped the Aggie offense going 2-for-3 at the plate with a walk to put pressure on the SJSU pitching staff, which used four pitchers.
NM State posted a run in the bottom of the first before scoring three in the fifth and two in the sixth to take a 6-0 lead and gain all the momentum of the game. Lecount posted his two-run homer in the fifth and Mack hammered his laser shot over the left field wall in the sixth.
A run on a wild pitch in the seventh gave NM State an 8-0 lead before two runs crossed the plate in the eighth to seal the game.
The series finale is Sunday, May 5 at 12:05 p.m. (MT). Sunday is also Senior Day with the NM State athletics department honoring the eight Aggie seniors after the game.
