LAS CRUCES, N.M. (KTSM) — A federal judge cleared a Las Cruces police officer in a deadly shooting from nearly three years ago.
Officer Horacio Rivera shot and killed 23-year-old Lance Hummell after he refused to drop a 4-foot samurai sword and came after him.
The decision came after a three-day trial. On the day of the shooting, neighbors said they heard police scream at him to put the sword down, followed by four shots. Mayor Ken Miyagishima said he fully supported the decision to clear Hummell of any wrongdoing.
