Las Cruces, NM (KTSM) — New Mexico State University's search for a president continues.
The media was invited to question the fourth out of five candidates.
Dr. Elsa Murano was president of Texas A&M University from January 2008 to June 2009.
That's when she resigned and returned to the faculty there.
It's her heritage, that Dr. Murano said makes her a good candidate for this job.
"To lead an Hispanic serving institution like N.M.S.U., you need someone who is very aware of the issues in the Hispanic community," said Dr. Elsa Murano.
Murano said you don't have to be Hispanic to have a grasp on what issues are pressing to the Hispanic community. She's from Havana, Cuba, but her family fled when she was a kid.
Murano's the first person in her family to go to college, that's something many students at N.M.S.U. can relate to.
"A lot of these students come from families where no body's ever been to college, nobodies ever thought of going to colelge," she said.
The media will get a chance to meet the fifth candidate, Daniel Howard on Wednesday.
